Weld All Solvent Cement – Introduction and its Applications

CPVC pipe and fittings are increasingly becoming popular in corrosive and high-temperature situations. CPVC piping systems can be joined using various methods such as flanging, threading, or mechanically. However, in most cases, solvent cement is the preferred option. Weld all solvent cement is a process that is fast, easy, and creates a stronger joint than most other options.
Understanding Solvent Cement
Solvent cement and glue are often confused with each other. Although both achieve the same goal of joining pipes and fittings, each one is made very differently.Glue only sticks materials together, so when a force hits that area, that connection can break easily. Solvent cement, on the other hand, is composed of CPVC resin, stabilizers and fillers diffused in a mixture of solvents. The purpose of the solvents are as follows:

  • Dissolve the CPVC resin, and
  • Prepare the surface of the fitting and pipe

Benefits of Using CPVC Pipes

When the solvents are applied to the top layer of the pipe and fitting, they essentially dissolve that layer, making it easier for the pipe and fitting to come into contact with each other. This process ensures that the material is fused upon the two pieces connecting. The role of CPVC resin is to fill in any gaps that may occur during this whole process.

Since this occurs at the molecular level, when the solvents evaporate, the joint becomes uniform and strong.

The stabilizers protect the cement against any heat or oxidization thus preventing it from degrading the solution.

Types of Solvent Cements

Although solvent cement has been described as the solution of solvents, stabilizers, and fillers, it is more commonly known by its thickness. This thickness is the result of the amount of resin, in other words, a greater amount of resin results in a better thickness, which leads to better filling of any gaps in the joint.


There are three types of thickness:

  • Regular bodied
  • Medium bodied
  • Heavy bodied

Wondering which one to choose? That depends on the diameter of the CPVC pipe and its application.

Industrial Applications

Heavy bodied solvent cement is recommended for industrial applications. However, since this type of cement has more resin, making them less solvent, a primer should be used.

A primer is generally applied to the pipe and fittings to soften the material and get rid of any surface molecules. Post this, the cement is applied to further soften and form a strong connection of the pipe and fitting.

Highly Corrosive Applications

For more aggressive applications, it is recommended to use solvent cement that is not so high in filters, as these can be attacked by chemicals, thereby degrading the system.
